SEO, AEO and GEO: one strategy, different discovery journeys.

A practical way to connect organic search and AI visibility without buying into shortcuts.

Start with the buyer’s question

Your customer is trying to make a decision. They might type a short query into a search engine, ask a detailed question in an assistant or compare several sources before speaking to sales. The interface changes, but the need for useful, accurate information remains. A connected search strategy starts with the decisions your audience needs help making. List the questions your sales team hears repeatedly. Separate basic definitions from comparison questions and purchase requirements. This creates a content map grounded in demand rather than a list of fashionable acronyms.

Define the disciplines without building silos

Search Engine Optimization improves how a website can be found and understood in organic search. Answer Engine Optimization focuses on clear responses to questions. Generative Engine Optimization examines how a business appears in generated answers and their supporting sources. These are useful planning distinctions, but they share much of the same foundation. A product page with accurate specifications, a clear explanation and supporting evidence can serve several discovery journeys. Assigning separate teams to rewrite the same page for each acronym can create duplication instead of progress.

Make expertise verifiable

A confident claim is not evidence. Explain where information comes from, what it applies to and where its limits are. If a result depends on a particular time period or customer situation, say so. Publish original observations only when you can support them. For industrial companies, that might mean precise capabilities and application guidance. For service businesses, it might mean a transparent process and a useful explanation of deliverables. Avoid manufacturing credentials, reviews or statistics simply to make content appear authoritative.

Treat AI observations as samples

A set of prompts can help you understand how a brand is represented, but it is not a complete measurement of the market. Record the prompt, platform, date and relevant settings so the observation can be repeated. Separate a brand mention from a linked citation, and separate both from an actual referral. A citation does not automatically create a lead. Look for downstream evidence in analytics and sales records before claiming a commercial effect. Share uncertainty with decision-makers rather than compressing every observation into a single visibility score.

Build the foundations first

Google states that its AI search features do not require special schema or additional technical optimizations beyond established search requirements. That makes a sensible first phase straightforward: address important access problems, strengthen useful pages and make key information easy to find. Structured data should accurately describe visible content. A machine-readable summary such as llms.txt can document a site, but should not be sold as a ranking switch. Prioritize content and technical work by the customer value it creates, then assess emerging opportunities with measured experiments.

Your first working plan

Choose one commercially important topic. Map the questions around it, review the pages that answer them and identify missing evidence. Improve the most useful page before commissioning a large content batch. Establish a search baseline and a small, documented AI observation panel. Review relevant visits and enquiry quality over time. This produces a practical learning loop: understand, publish, observe and improve. If you need help, begin with an audit that connects website quality and business priorities rather than promising guaranteed AI recommendations.
